Here is a quick Dune Concept I've done this week. I want to thank everyone who has provided me with feedback and critique. It really helped!

Bellow is the image before being critiqued. The main issues were readability. The revised concept does a better job at separating the foreground ship from the midground worm in tonality and color temperature. Also, the random grouping of teeth is more pleasant on the eye. Oh, and it had way too much texture to be humanly enjoyable... lol.

A big thank you to Ryan Wood, Tom Scholes, Shawn Melchor, Aj Trahan and Daniel Chou for their feedback and critiques.

This Painting is an experiment in the Alla Prima technique; direct painting. This consist of laying down a color from the start and making every stroke count as if it was final... well, ideally, that is. With this technique, the second pass is all about drawing and blocking in shadow shapes followed by paint buildup until finished. Often this technique will appear as if the painter starts in the focal area and works his/her way outward until the message is communicated; sometimes leaving the background half finished.

The Painting bellow is somewhat of an experiment with chiaroscuro with a limited color palette. This process starts with a good tonal study followed with the application of color as a second pass. This technique is a bit more forgiving as it allows you to see the entire picture early on. Note: with this technique, it's important to make the tonal very thin in order for the color layer to work well and to avoid mudying colors. Another note would be to avoid using thinner in the initial tonal; rather use something dry like a cloth or a dry brush or even a Q-tip.

Painting at Mt.Bunnel. This painting was painted extremely quickly almost in an Impressionist fashion as I had very little time; two or three hours. The gesture was made quickly and was just informative enough to have a rough idea of major mass placements. Then, blocking in of rough colors; each major shapes with two tones, a light and a dark. Then, just building up subtleties and tonal contrast.

Here's a work in progress painting of medieval spawn I'm currently working on. I haven't posted 'finished' images in a long time now because I've been so focussed on learning light and color through traditional painting and studies. But this will all help when I start doing more finished artwork.

The process of this painting is currently viewable on Ustream. I'm planning to take all the videos and combine them into an accelerated video with commentary over it. That'll be my first stab at doing a 'tutorial' type video. Hopefully, it can be helpful for other artists or students.
