This Painting is an experiment in the Alla Prima technique; direct painting. This consist of laying down a color from the start and making every stroke count as if it was final... well, ideally, that is. With this technique, the second pass is all about drawing and blocking in shadow shapes followed by paint buildup until finished. Often this technique will appear as if the painter starts in the focal area and works his/her way outward until the message is communicated; sometimes leaving the background half finished.

The Painting bellow is somewhat of an experiment with chiaroscuro with a limited color palette. This process starts with a good tonal study followed with the application of color as a second pass. This technique is a bit more forgiving as it allows you to see the entire picture early on. Note: with this technique, it's important to make the tonal very thin in order for the color layer to work well and to avoid mudying colors. Another note would be to avoid using thinner in the initial tonal; rather use something dry like a cloth or a dry brush or even a Q-tip.
